An Earth-sheltered Home in Pennsylvanian

An earth-sheltered three-bedroom residence in Elverson, PA, has some unique features, including arched exterior walls and an arched turf roof. It’s located in a rural area with a lot of farms, and nearby French Creek State Park and several nature preserves.

The 2,692-square-foot home was built in 1988. The spacious foyer features a wooden spiral staircase.

The kitchen has a “pull-out” pantry closet, and there’s a separate dining area with sliding doors to the backyard.

Arched windows, ceilings, and walls can be found throughout the home. On the second floor is a living room with a new wood-burning stove.

The home is energy efficient when it comes to utilities; the earth shelter design offers low heating and cooling bills.

  1. The exterior facade is a bit dystopian but the interior more than makes up for it. The arch shape is interesting and reminiscent of a quonset hut. And the fact that there’s at least a hundred meters or so between neighbors in this neck of the woods truly takes the cake for almost anyone who wants seclusion and breathing room!
