Not far from a bustling seaside town, on the banks of one of Wales’s most picturesque estuaries lies a stone building with an interesting story. The now derelict structure is tucked away from the main tourist hub and once served as a summer house for a woman from a South Wales coal mining family who lived in one of the stately homes in the area.
Apparently, in the late 1800s, the family who lived at the farm had a large family and one of the sons became a sea captain. He was away for many months and on the occasional leave when he came home, there was no room to stay at the farmhouse, so he had the hut built for himself and stayed there.
It would have been very comfortable, with a door and windows, as well as a fireplace inside. He would have felt like he was still at sea when the tide was fully in. He used to keep his boat on the slipway and could only bring it up on the highest tides.
