I just don’t understand why so many people think using portland cement-based stucco on straw bale homes is a good idea… I realize they built in a “drainage” channel (on a wooden surface, no less! >.<), but the cement will guarantee that there will be a near-constant moisture presence in the bale walls.
Many or maybe most strawbale houses use cement plaster. Have you checked recent articles in The Last Straw journal about plaster problems? I haven’t been keeping up.
I’m afraid not. I would guess that most people use cement stucco to either meet code requirements or because it’s the easiest/most readily available option.
