We want to thank Doug at http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/7/18/754890/-NFTTFill-The-Sandbags!-Edition for providing us some additional information on the history of sandbags (earthbags).
Doug has kindly informed us that sandbags can be traced back almost 250 years to the Napoleonic Wars, during which time French troops were issued sandbags for use in the field.
And as you can see in the photo below, sandbags were also used in the Civil War. Thank you Doug for this fascinating information.

Hi Cyndi. The .20 per bag assumes you’re buying used bags in good condition from farmers or feedstores. You may be able to buy them for even less. New bags are more expensive.
Where can I find the Recycled Eathbags At .20 pr bag?? I want to build a dome @ 16 diameter. interior… I’m told I will need at least an large roll that will cost me $500.00+ at Cal-earth… That is a big difference from 100.00+ you say on your site.
There are various possible vendors listed at http://earthbagbuilding.com/resources.htm#supplies
