Handbuilt small homes and the building codes

“This video is about small handbuilt homes and how building codes stand in the way. For the first part of this 2-part documentary on why we need small handbuilt homes please visit: https://youtu.be/dZF6d3gUdd0

Owen: I would have liked to have seen a more balanced approach with more information on earthbag building, but then again this 56-minute video makes lots of good points that can help natural builders. It raises awareness of natural building and sustainable building in general, and has lots of practical advice for dealing with building code officials. One glaring omission was any mention of building in rural areas with few or no codes. Granted, there are fewer and fewer areas where there are few or no building codes, but a mention of this option might have been helpful for some. This is obviously a hot topic because our #1 most popular blog post has always been Counties with Few or No Building Codes.

  1. I’m half way through Part 1 of this series. The producers have done an excellent job and I look forward to seeing more similar videos. There is so much demand for this information. I encourage them to make 10 or so related videos and put them all together on a DVD as well as publishing on YouTube.
