Morning Dove is a model of 21st-century desert architecture set in Twentynine Palms, California. There are two structures, a main house, and a guest house, both featuring rammed earth construction.
Soil from the property, which is mostly granite, was mixed with colored mortars. The mixture was then poured into forms and compacted by a tamper. Once the first layer is completed, the forms are moved, and the process is repeated.
The owners wanted to build a home that did not abuse the land or deplete the natural landscape, but instead preserved the abundant open space and highlighted a sense of place.
They feel lucky that the property provided them with a composition of earth that allowed them to fulfill this inspiration.
