“Transition Asheville Trip to an off grid Earthbag home of Morgan Caraway & Mary Jane.
In March of 2009 Morgan and Mary moved on to a piece of land near Asheville, NC and began homesteading. At first, they lived in a yurt that they built. In July of 2009 they began constructing a round earthbag house. They finished the main part of the house at the end of November that year. The next year saw the construction of a cordwood bathroom and beginning in the Spring of 2011, they built a sunroom addition to their house. They are off of the grid and use solar power and the humanure system (http://www.humanurehandbook.com/).
They are looking to find a larger piece of land and start an intentional community with like-minded folks.”

Note how they built in stages and did a good job of keeping costs low.
Does anyone know of an earthbag home in NC open to tour or stay in? I want to build one so I want to visualize what the end product might look like.
We are currently building an earthbag house in Lansing, NC IF you have any interest in hands-on experience we have places to set up a tent and food. email coletamika@gmail.com
You can post your proposal on our free Bulletin Board. See link at top of page.
BTW, what was roof constructed from?
Check previous blog posts. I think it was just wood framing.
Permits..??? I’m west of Asheville in Roxboro on a little over an acre and have a lot of things that have been brewing in my mind for several years. Just wondering how hard it is to deal with “officialdom” in that area. Used to live in Weaverville, just north of Asheville and would love eventually to get back to that area. I’m a sucka for trout fishing and mountain biking. Where better than Asheville?
Asheville is one of the top picks for natural builders. For some reason there are places like this where people are more tuned in to natural building and homesteading in general.
