We’ve recently explored rustic furniture 1 and 2, pallet craft, wood flooring, wood ceilings 1 and 2, box beams, and wood cladding 1 and 2. There’s also a blog post on Wood Siding on Earthbag Houses. This seems like a good time to look at some low cost alternatives to manufactured trim. The main idea is to use local and sustainable materials, and do-it-yourself to slash costs so you can build mortgage free. This includes making your own simple trim from reclaimed wood, pallets, naturally curved wood from a forest, and wood milled with a bandsaw mill.

Do an online search for wood trim or door casing and compare with the examples shown here. Most trim nowadays – to my eye, anyway – looks either lifeless, bland or pretentious. Most factory made trim has become a mass, machine-produced object that is devoid of human feeling. In fact, a lot of trim is now made with MDF (wood fibers glued together), plastic or veneer. The examples shown above, in contrast, have a certain flair and honest, craftsman style even though they’re all quite simple.
