Just like polypropylene bags, raschel bags also are susceptible to UV damage. This is no surprise to long term readers, but I’m just reporting my experience to encourage earthbag builders to protect their structures from ultraviolet damage.
The raschel earthbag made on approximately January 5 for my post titled Open Weave Fabric: Ideal Working Properties has clearly deteriorated. Today is March 13. So the bag strength for this particular product is virtually nonexistent after about 9 weeks.
There are numerous steps that can be taken to protect bags against UV damage — buy UV rated bags, spray walls with paint, etc. Search our blog for more information.
Aly has a nice picture of the sun damage to her leno bags after 2 months in the Taos sun..
