Known as the “Wonder Haus,” this home is nestled into the earth for maximum energy efficiency and has a four-story tower. The design was modeled after the Anasazi Tribe’s stargazing practices.
Located on almost seven acres in Pagosa Springs, CO, it has been a wildly successful short-term vacation rental for the current owners. Its eye-catching design was even featured on Season 2 of the Netflix show “The World’s Most Amazing Vacation Rentals,” in 2021.
The structure was built in 2001 by Formworks, a company that specializes in earth-sheltered homes.
The 2,600-square-foot interior has a large great room with plenty of windows with views of the outdoors. The space also has a chef’s kitchen, two bedrooms, two lofts, and a four-car garage. A patio outside offers a fire pit and space for lounging.
Built into the earth, the dwelling stays warm in the winter with passive solar heat, radiant floor heating, and a fireplace. The surrounding earth keeps the home cool in the summer.
The owners say that the home is “intentionally unconventional.”
