Tim Kring’s Adobe Roundhouse

I recently got this email from Tim Kring:

“Hi Kelly, I built this round structure loosely around the round house studio plan.  The base wall is stabilized adobe using approximately 8% Portland cement and earth bag tubes from Cal earth. Once the wall was above knee high I switched to traditional Adobe block .  I really like the round house designs as it’s easy to keep the wall vertical. The roof works great to help keep the building comfortable.

Tim Kring in Sugar Hill, Georgia has been sending Adobe in Action updates about his owner builder adobe project for years now. Our board member Quentin Wilson has assisted Tim with some of the technical and design questions that have come up along the way and we consider Tim a good friend and supporter of our work at Adobe in Action. Last week he sent us these pictures with a short note:

Taking a siesta in the adobe hut here in Sugar Hill GA! With the cost of housing, why would we skip out on the enjoyment and satisfaction of every shovel-full of mud in building our own place and the accompanying savings (and fitness and therapeutic benefits)? Since we all played with legos as kids, you’re already an expert at stacking big mud blocks. Our friends and family can help us fill in the missing pieces of the project along the way and bring it all together. A sense of accomplishment, freedom and pride rather than a mortgage that may become a 30-year sentence. As the builder of your own home, you are now probably the expert on most aspects of it – which makes you the handy man who can take care of anything that may be needed at a very friendly price in the years ahead.
