The Platform Hill pavilion, completed between 2022 and 2025, sits among the hills south of Chengdu and functions as a visitor destination and event space that capitalizes on scenic panoramas.
The structure uses a series of interlocking timber arches clad with an earth berm that allows the building to blend into the landscape and echo the hill that existed before construction. The main viewing area features a large glazed opening and sliding doors that connect an interior terraced seating area with an outdoor balcony overlooking the surrounding terrain. Paths and a secondary viewing deck connected by a twisting staircase integrate the platform into existing trails and enhance accessibility.
The pavilion’s design incorporates sustainable strategies such as natural ventilation, rainwater collection, and an earth roof planted with native grasses that support biodiversity and provide insulation against temperature changes.
