Yesterday’s story featured a bus conversion. In the YouTube comments I saw that the price of bus insurance was a bit pricey and this got me thinking about lower cost options. I think far more people would be interested in van living if they want to travel cheaply. There’s a wealth of free information on the Internet that explain every aspects of converting vans into tiny mobile housing. Vans are easier to come by and far less conspicuous and expensive than bus and truck conversions.

I’ve been following Justin Rhodes on YouTube on his cross country tour of the best sustainable farms. In a recent episode he briefly shows how a thriving plot in his garden was made with just throwing food scraps to the chickens. The chickens scratched through it and turned the scraps into fertile compost. At this point you could plant seeds and starts of your choosing. Or you could do what Justin did and just wait and see what springs up naturally. In Justin’s garden they got peas, tomatoes, corn, and a bunch of squash and pumpkin all for free without tilling or planting.

Lehman’s is the biggest, best store of homesteading supplies that I know of. I’ve heard about this company for years and studied their website. In this video Justin Rhodes and the owner give us a personal tour of the store. It’s almost like a museum but more fun. As Justin says, “This is like a homesteaders paradise. Lehman’s Hardware Store of Ohio sells everything you’d need to live off grid.” Very entertaining tour watching the kids have fun and seeing all the interesting products.
