Standardized Earthbag Detail Drawings for Nepal

This is an invitation to all Nepali architects and engineers to help create standardized detail drawings to optimize and expedite earthbag building. The goal is to create open source detail drawings for foundations, buttresses, typical wall sections and elevations, recommended reinforcement methods, windows, doors, etc. This would greatly speed the acceptance of earthbag building in Nepal (and probably other countries).

As everyone knows, there’s a huge need for low cost shelters in Nepal. One of the most popular designs is the type shown above that’s being used by Byond.org. Shelters like these are fast and easy to erect. It’s interesting to see the wide variety of uses and building details. The recipients finish the end walls using their choice of materials. People are using recycled brick, adobe, wood, stone and bamboo to close the ends at minimal expense, as well as using recycled doors and windows. Details include porch roofs, vent gaps at top of end walls, benches. Some people extend the shelters to include outside laundry and baths. Free metal roofing from the government can be used on these shelters.

Here is the round earthbag village library I have almost completed. I have seen your inspiring works with earthbags and am happy to inform you that I am also into green building here in Kenya. I have done a demo house using earthbags and will be going for the next level of building as eco friendly training school using this method. We would want to include off grid power eventually but that is for the future.
