Earth House in Gujarat, India is Net Zero in Energy

This well ventilated home with plenty of natural light in Gujarat, India has three bedrooms and a pool. The layout is a simple one, divided in two blocks, one with all living areas and the other with bedroom spaces for a family of four. Between the two sit the leisure components of the pool and a gazebo.

The Earth House was constructed as a net positive home comprised of rammed earth along with other natural materials found at the site. It adopts passive sustainable strategies such as considering sun orientation and siting the house to face North for optimum day light and natural ventilation that reduces energy requirements for the house in the long run.

The 3000 square foot construction has a thick building skin with earth walls that reduce solar heat gain and maintain a temperate 7 to 10 degrees C (45 to 50 degrees F) cooler than the outside in the Tropical climate of Gujarat. The house also has an inclined roof targeted at capturing maximum solar energy to produce electricity for the space. The Earth House harvests water from the abundant rainfall.

While sustainability is at the core of this design, it doesn’t compromise on aesthetics or functionality. It proves that eco-friendliness can coexist seamlessly with beauty and practicality.
